I am two days into the cold frame experiment and I am already seeing results. I checked the temperature today when I got home from work and inside the cold frame it was about 54 degrees. That is after two days of overcast, cloudy weather, and the cold frames are at least 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the outside air temperature. I figured I would stick a shovel in, and to my surprise, the soil was completely thawed out and filled with earth worms. That part of the garden received at least 6-8 inches of leaf mulch this fall and that was reduced down to a soggy, composted inch or so of organic matter that vaguely resembled leaves. After realizing the soil was completely thawed out, I thought I would try another experiment, I would start gardening in March. So today in the DIY Cold Frame garden I planted Rocky Top Salad Mix, Bloomsdale Spinach and radishes. I hope to be eating a salad from this late winter garden by the end of March. Exciting!
